But biggest gain for us came from preconditioning paper to the room (20–22°C, 45–55% RH) and confirming roller settings before the first makeready. What tightened our matches most was stabilizing ink temp — our circulator holds the inker at 23–24°C and we idle 10 minutes so everything equalizes; “warm ink flows, cold ink lies.” Small caveat: metallics and heavy solids behave better 1–2°C cooler.

I’ve had better plate-to-press consistency by setting impression with a bearer stripe — on our Speedmaster we hold a 3 mm stripe on all units — and I won’t touch curves until that looks right on the first pull; “trust the stripe.” If you’re on a non-bearer press, a packing gauge gets you the same check before chasing chemistry or ink.

Not Sir Ian, but the move that finally steadied our on‑press match was treating the plate processor like a press: daily step target and laser power check, developer at 24°C and about 1.3 mS/cm, and we log it before touching curves.
